Here's a layout for a modded version of the Craig Anderton Tube Sound Fuzz. A great distortion that has inspired many others such as the Red Llama from Way Huge (one of my favourites). My brother gave me the classic book "electronic projects for musicians" by Craig Anderton and the schematic was there so I could not resist doing a layout for it.
At first I drew up a layout 1/1 with the original schematic with a "turbo" switch. It basically bypasses the fuzz pot and increases the gain (alot!). But the turbo mode cause oscillation so I decided to remove the switch and play around with the gain alittle and this is the modded version I ended up with. Craig Anderton later did a buffered version of this circuit, probably to tame the oscillation.

I made a stock one of these in high school back in the 80s. It had issues with oscillation as you mentioned. A few years ago, I re-housed it, adding a Bazz Fuss circuit before the Tube Sound part of the circuit, and followed it with a tweed style tone control. It is my favorite dirt pedal. Sounds very much like a tweed amp cranked and the Bazz Fuss sounds like it is going into an overdriven amp. The tone control makes both effects much more versatile, but I must admit, I am curious how this would sound with a Bass, Middle, Treble tone stack. A compressor placed before it lends a sound almost like tube rectifier sag.
